In October 2014, Mark Handforth inaugurated the Studio des Acacias with new works specially designed for the occasion.
Mark Handforth is a British artist born in Hong Kong and has lived in Miami for over 20 years. He is a graduate of the Frankfurt Academy of Fine Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. It is acclaimed worldwide for its installations in public spaces. His monumental sculptures have been regularly presented in the United States, Central Park in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (MCA).
A worthy heir to Pop Art, he is known for his sculptures that divert objects from everyday life and urban furniture. Benches, streetlights, signboards, vespas are thus re-presented, extracted from their original context and re-injected in a playful way into exhibition spaces or public spaces. Light is omnipresent in his work. Fluorescent light, candle light, city light. In his works, luminous tubes become eclipses (Eclipse, 2003) or rising suns (Rising Sun, 2003) and urban furniture/lighting is folded, turned upside down and abused not without humour.
